むかしむかし、ある村にとても欲ばりでけちな長者がいました。
Once upon a time, there was a very greedy and stingy rich man in a village.

At breakfast, just looking at pickled plums would make his mouth water, and he would have them instead of a meal.

There was also a man in that village who was very good at lying.

One day, this man came to the rich mans house with a horse.

He hid the money in the horses manure and lied, saying, This horse poops gold, and sold the horse at a high price.

Six months later, the man came to the wealthy man again and lied, saying, This is a pot that can cook rice without using firewood, and sold the pot to him.

The old man was deceived, so he became very angry.

So, he caught the man, locked him in a barrel, and tried to throw it into the sea.

However, the wealthy man felt sorry for him and decided to go to the temple to pray.

Meanwhile, the man tricked a passing herring seller and switched places with the person in the barrel.
。
The old man threw the barrel into the sea as it was, but when he returned home, the man was standing in front of the gate as if nothing had happened.

The man said, You can only catch herring in shallow seas.
。
If you go a bit deeper, you might be able to catch sea bream or flatfish.
。
The old man wanted to eat sea bream and flatfish, so he got into a barrel himself and ordered his servant to throw it into the deep sea.
