取手アートプロジェクトは、地域社会を活性化するために長期的に続けられている芸術活動だ。
The Toride Art Project, is a long term art project that aims to stimulate the local community.
始まりは千九百九十九年、市内に東京芸術大学先端芸術表現科が新設されたことをきっかけに、
They started in 1999, motivated by the fact that the Tokyo University of the Arts newly established the Department of Intermedia Art within the city.
行政が呼びかけ、大学と市民が加わって、プロジェクトは立ち上がった。
The administration called for it and the college and the public joined in, starting the project.
まず始めたのは、公募で集めた作品の野外展示と地元の作家のアトリエを公開するイベント。
What began first, was the outdoor exhibition of works collected from the public and the exhibition of studios of local authors.
住み慣れた町を見る目線を変えてみよう、という発想だ。

The plan to overcome the crisis within the community, was art.
プロジェクトが始まった頃は、現代アートは市民にとって縁遠いものだった。
When the project started, modern art was a distant matter for the townspeople.
だが、継続的に市民を巻き込む活動を続けることで、理解が広がり、スタッフなどとして参加する市民も増えてきた。
However, by continuously making efforts to involve the people, appreciation spread, which increased the number of people who joined as staff.
二千十三年現在、プロジェクトのメインテーマは、「アートのある団地」と「半農半芸」。
Currently in 2013, the project's main theme is to be an art infused multi-unit complex and be half-agricultural and half-entertainment.
より日常生活の近くにアートを定着させ、町の活力を持続的に引き上げてゆこうとしている。
By having art take hold closer to one's daily life, they try to increase the vitality of the town continuously.
