The global scientific journal Science has announced that it has retracted a paper on bacteria published 15 years ago by a research team including NASA, the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

科学雑誌「サイエンス」が24日、撤回したのは、2010年にNASAなどの研究チームが発表した論文で、アメリカ・カリフォルニア州の塩水湖で採取した細菌が「猛毒のヒ素で生命を維持している」といった内容のものです
Science magazine retracted on the 24th a paper published in 2010 by a research team including NASA, which claimed that bacteria collected from a saltwater lake in California, USA, sustain life using highly toxic arsenic.
当時、NASAは記者会見を開き、「生物学の常識を覆す画期的な成果だ」と説明し、注目を集めました
At the time, NASA held a press conference and explained, This is a groundbreaking achievement that overturns the conventional wisdom of biology, drawing a great deal of attention.
しかし、ほかの研究チームが同じ結果が出るか調べたところ再現できず、論文の内容に対する疑問や批判が起きていました
However, when other research teams tried to see if they would get the same results, they were unable to reproduce them, leading to doubts and criticisms about the content of the paper.
サイエンスの編集部は、撤回した背景について、「論文中の主要な結論が欠陥のあるデータに基づいていると考えている」とした一方、研究上の不正行為は見つかっていないとしています
The editorial department of Science stated regarding the retraction that we believe the main conclusions of the paper are based on flawed data, while also noting that no research misconduct has been found.
さらに、近年は論文を撤回する基準が拡大しているとして、「重要な結論が裏付けられていないと編集部が判断した場合、不正がなくても、論文の撤回は適切だとみなされる」と説明しています
Furthermore, it is explained that in recent years, the criteria for retracting papers have been expanding, stating, If the editorial board determines that important conclusions are not substantiated, retraction of the paper is considered appropriate even if there is no misconduct.
これに対し研究チーム側は「撤回基準が研究の誠実性という枠を超えている」などとして、撤回に同意しないとするコメントを発表し反発しています
In response, the research team issued a statement objecting to the retraction, saying that the grounds for retraction go beyond the framework of research integrity, and they do not agree to the retraction.
