At the final day of the Nagoya Grand Sumo Tournament, maegashira Kotoshoho defeated Aonishiki and won his first championship with a record of 13 wins and 2 losses.

The victory of a rank-and-file wrestler is the first in eight tournaments since Onosato in the Spring Tournament last year.

After the 14th day of the Nagoya tournament, Kotoshoho stands alone at the top with two losses, while Aoseikin and Kusano, each with three losses and just one win behind, are chasing him. As a result, the race for the championship has narrowed down to these three rank-and-file wrestlers.

On the final day, the 27th, Kotoshoho faced Seiseikin directly, won with a tsukiotoshi thrust down, and achieved his first championship with a record of 13 wins and 2 losses.

This tournament, Kotoshoho was inspired by the growth of his younger brother Kotoueho, who made his top division debut, making them the 13th pair of brothers in history to both reach the makuuchi division.

In the first five days, I had a record of three wins and two losses, but as the tournament moved into the middle phase, my performance gradually improved. By taking a more offensive approach, I won five matches in a row from the sixth day and secured a majority of wins on the tenth day.

In the final stages, where matches against top-ranked opponents were scheduled, he earned his first gold star by defeating the new yokozuna, Onosato, for the first time on Day 13, and then rode that momentum to finish the tournament with ten consecutive wins.

While yokozuna and ozeki dropped out of the championship race due to absence or poor performance, Kotoshoho, an unranked maegashira, won the unusual battle among rank-and-file wrestlers and took home his first Emperors Cup.

A sumo powerhouse, he was a member of the Saitama Sakae High School sumo club. Alongside classmates such as maegashira Oho, he made a name for himself and joined the Sadogatake stable while still in school, making his professional debut at the Kyushu tournament in 2017 Heisei 29.

In addition to using his 1.9-meter-tall physique for thrusting and pushing, he can also wrestle effectively in a right-hand inside grip, which led to high expectations from early on. He was promoted to the Juryo division at the Kyushu tournament in the first year of Reiwa, changing his ring name from Kotonokake to the current Kotoshoho.

And then, with an impressive record of 12 wins and 3 losses in the Spring Tournament of Reiwa 2 2020, he won the Juryo division and, at just 20 years old, made his debut in the top division in the rankings for the Summer Tournament.

Due to the cancellation of the Summer Tournament caused by the spread of the novel coronavirus, his top division debut came at the following July tournament. From that tournament, he achieved a winning record for three consecutive tournaments and rose in the rankings to his highest position of Maegashira 3.

And then, at the New Year tournament the year before last, he finished the final day tied for the lead with an 11-3 record, but lost in a deciding match against Ozeki Takakeisho, narrowly missing his first championship, though he demonstrated his undeniable strength.

On the other hand, due in part to injuries, after his debut in the top division he was unable to firmly establish himself among the upper ranks, taking five absences and being demoted to the Juryo division twice.

This tournament marks his 25th appearance in the makuuchi division, and he entered as Maegashira 15. He steadily accumulated wins with forward-moving sumo.

If Kotoshoho wins, he will secure the championship at that point. If he loses, there is a possibility of a championship playoff involving up to three people: Kotoshoho, Seiseikin, and Kusano.

From day 6, Kotoshoho has been on a 9-match winning streak, and since he has remained calm even against top-ranked opponents in the final stages, he will want to firmly push up from the initial charge against his opponent, whose strength is a low stance.

Anseikin, on the other hand, wants to use his specialty against bigger opponents by not losing out on pressure at the initial charge, getting inside his opponents reach, grabbing the front belt, and getting into his favored position with his head against the opponent. He hopes to win and force a championship playoff.

Kusano wants to avoid being overpowered at the initial charge, get inside, move forward aggressively, use his agility to break his opponent’s posture, and seize the opportunity to win.
