Following the House of Councillors election, an extraordinary Diet session to select the new President of the House of Councillors and others will be convened on the 1st of next month.

Regarding the session period, the ruling party proposed five days, but an agreement was not reached, so the ruling and opposition parties will continue discussions.

At a meeting of the Steering Committee of both the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors held on the morning of the 29th, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi was in attendance.

In this statement, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hayashi announced the policy to convene an extraordinary Diet session three days later, on August 1st, to elect the new President and Vice President of the House of Councillors following the recent House of Councillors election.

After this, at the House of Representatives board meeting, discussions were held regarding the session schedule, and the ruling parties proposed a five-day session ending on August 5th.

In response, the opposition parties are coordinating among themselves to submit a bill to abolish the provisional gasoline tax rate during the extraordinary Diet session. They explained that if the handling of the bill is not settled, they cannot decide on the session period, and thus no agreement was reached. As a result, the ruling and opposition parties will continue discussions.

On the other hand, in the extraordinary Diet session, in response to the Japan-U.S. agreement regarding U.S. tariff measures, both the ruling and opposition parties are coordinating schedules to hold intensive deliberations in the budget committees of both the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors, requesting Prime Minister Ishiba to attend.
