The extraordinary session of the Diet will be convened on August 1st following the House of Councillors election in July.

Following the House of Representatives, the ruling party is also in the minority in the House of Councillors, and next week an intensive deliberation will be held in the Budget Committee, where debates are expected over issues such as the Japan-U.S. agreement regarding American tariff measures.

The 218th extraordinary session of the Diet, which will be the first session after the House of Councillors election in July, will be convened on August 1.

In the morning session of the House of Councillors, Masakazu Sekiguchi of the Liberal Democratic Party is expected to be re-elected as Speaker, and Tetsuro Fukuyama, former Secretary-General of the Constitutional Democratic Party, is expected to be elected as Vice Speaker.

In addition, regarding the allocation of the 27 standing and special committee chairpersons and review committee chairperson positions in the House of Councillors, through coordination between the ruling and opposition parties, the Democratic Party for the People and the Sanseito, both of which increased their seats, newly secured committee chair positions. Furthermore, the chairperson of the Constitutional Review Committee was assigned to the Constitutional Democratic Party, meaning that members of the Constitutional Democratic Party will serve as chairpersons in both houses of the Diet.

Although the Liberal Democratic Party lost some seats, it will retain positions such as the Chairperson of the Committee on Rules and Administration and the Chairperson of the Budget Committee. On August 1, the appointments for these chairpersons and other positions will be officially decided.

And in the afternoon, the opening ceremony will be held with the presence of His Majesty the Emperor.

The session of the extraordinary Diet is expected to last for five days until August 5.

As a result of the House of Councillors election, the ruling party has become a minority in both the House of Representatives and the House of Councillors. On the 4th of next week, intensive deliberations by the Budget Committee will be held in the House of Representatives, followed by the House of Councillors on the 5th. Debates are expected to take place over issues such as the Japan-U.S. agreement concerning U.S. tariff measures.

On the other hand, discussions on policy matters will also begin between the ruling and opposition parties.

The ruling and opposition parties, including the Liberal Democratic Party and the Constitutional Democratic Party, agreed on July 30th to abolish the provisional gasoline tax rate as early as possible within this year.

In the working-level talks starting on August 1st, discussions are expected to focus on securing financial resources in the event that the provisional tax rate is abolished, as well as measures for local governments whose tax revenues would decrease.

The six ruling and opposition parties intend to aim for the enactment of necessary bills with the extraordinary Diet session expected to be convened in the fall, and they wish to continue discussions even after the current session ends.
