Four people have been arrested for defrauding a woman in her 80s living in Chiba Prefecture out of 1 million yen in cash, by making a false phone call pretending to be her son and saying things like I need settlement money.

One of the suspects was also arrested last year for acting as the cash collector in a series of robbery cases carried out by a hired perpetrator through illegal part-time jobs in the Tokyo metropolitan area, and the Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the connection.

Those arrested include Hiroto Fukuchi, 26, of no fixed address and unemployed, Kaito Hosaka, 26, an unemployed resident of Kawaguchi City, Saitama Prefecture, and two others.

According to the Metropolitan Police Department, in November last year, a woman in her 80s living in Chiba Prefecture received a false phone call from someone pretending to be her son, saying things like “I got a married woman pregnant and need settlement money,” and is suspected of fraudulently obtaining 1 million yen in cash from the woman.

It is believed that among the four, suspect Fukuchi was in charge of giving instructions regarding the receipt and collection of cash, while suspect Hosaka was responsible for collecting the cash.

Hosaka, the suspect, has also been arrested and indicted as the person responsible for collecting the stolen cash in a series of robbery cases carried out by so-called dark part-time job recruits in the Tokyo metropolitan area. These include the case in October last year in which a 75-year-old man was assaulted and killed at his home in Aoba Ward, Yokohama, and another case in Funabashi City, Chiba Prefecture, where an elderly couple was assaulted and a large amount of cash was stolen.

The Metropolitan Police Department is also investigating possible connections to a series of robbery cases.

The Metropolitan Police Department has not disclosed the statements of the four individuals.
