When I was studying English at Tsuda College, the war ended, and after that, I entered the University of Tokyo, which had become coeducational.

In 1953, while I was working as an assistant at the Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia, I spent three years in India. Afterwards, from 1959 to 1962, I continued my research in the UK, Italy, as well as at the University of Chicago and the University of London.

My research theme is the social structure of underdeveloped ethnic groups.

In India, I rode elephants and encountered tigers and leopards many times.

If its a small snake, its not so bad, but there are also snakes big enough to swallow a human whole.

I was particularly wary of such snakes, so I moved into the target village and conducted my research there.

I have even visited a village that, until quite recently, was home to a head-hunting tribe.

It is said that its a thing of the past and no longer exists, but I was truly shocked to see that even now, there are still many skulls hanging on the walls of the village chiefs house.

I have seen with my own eyes what happened in the past.

If it were just a few, I wouldn’t mind, but I’m really surprised there are so many.

Its just like an Indiana Jones movie.

This research was highly acclaimed at European scientific conferences, and I gave many presentations and research talks in various places.

When I started researching rural areas of Japan, I began to notice similarities shared by different regions.

It is a form of collective behavior based on vertical order, with a representative example being the yoriai local community gathering.

When I listened to a university faculty meeting, I realized that their behavior was similar to a yoriai a neighborhood gathering.

In other words, it could be a characteristic of Japanese society.

The idea led to the creation of the book Vertical Society Relationships, which became a bestseller with over one million copies sold.

This is a document that unravels the mysteries of the period of rapid economic growth, and since its publication, this book continues to be read by many people even today.

In that book, I also predicted the emergence of a fragmented society, saying, Not only because of the vertical social structure, but also because the horizontal connections are weak, the sense of loneliness among the lower classes in Japan will become increasingly serious.
