The spacecraft carrying astronaut Takuya Onishi, who had been staying on the International Space Station since March this year, along with three others, splashed down off the coast of California in the western United States in the early hours of the 10th Japan time, returning to Earth for the first time in about five months.
宇宙飛行士の大西卓哉さんは、ことし3月からおよそ5か月間にわたって宇宙に滞在し、将来の有人宇宙探査を見据えた二酸化炭素除去システムの実証実験などに携わったほか、日本人宇宙飛行士としては3人目となる、国際宇宙ステーションの船長を務めました。
Astronaut Takuya Onishi stayed in space for about five months starting this March, during which he was involved in demonstration experiments on carbon dioxide removal systems in preparation for future manned space exploration, and also became the third Japanese astronaut to serve as commander of the International Space Station.
大西さんは、今月2日、国際宇宙ステーションに到着した日本人宇宙飛行士の油井亀美也さんに業務の引き継ぎを行ったあと、ほかの3人の宇宙飛行士とともにアメリカの民間宇宙船「クルードラゴン」に搭乗して日本時間の9日午前7時すぎ、国際宇宙ステーションを離れました。
Mr. Onishi, after handing over duties to Japanese astronaut Kimiya Yui, who arrived at the International Space Station on the 2nd of this month, boarded the American commercial spacecraft Crew Dragon with three other astronauts and left the International Space Station shortly after 7 a.m. Japan time on the 9th.
宇宙船はその後、地球への帰還に向けたエンジン噴射を行い、大気圏に突入。
The spacecraft then fired its engines for the return to Earth and entered the atmosphere.
そして、上空でパラシュートを開くとゆっくりと高度を下げて日本時間の10日午前0時半すぎに、アメリカ・カリフォルニア州の沖合に着水しました。
And then, after opening the parachute at high altitude and gradually descending, it splashed down off the coast of California, USA, just after 12:30 a.m. Japan time on the 10th.
宇宙船は待機していた専用の船に回収され、ハッチが開くと、中から大西さんが現れ、迎えのスタッフらに手を振って元気な姿を見せました。
The spacecraft was retrieved by a dedicated vessel that had been standing by, and when the hatch opened, Mr. Onishi appeared from inside, waving to the waiting staff and showing that he was in good spirits.
