A 26-year-old company employee from Tokyo, who had gone missing after being attacked by a brown bear while climbing Mt. Rausu in Shari Town on the Shiretoko Peninsula, Hokkaido, was found dead in the mountains on the 15th.

A brown bear was exterminated near the man, and a research institute in Hokkaido is analyzing its DNA to determine whether it was the individual that attacked him.

On the morning of the 14th, on Mt. Rausu in Shari Town, Hokkaido, a male climber in his twenties was attacked by a bear and dragged into the forest, after which his whereabouts became unknown.

When the police searched together with local hunters on the 15th, a body was found in the mountains and identified as Keisuke Soda, a 26-year-old company employee from Sumida Ward, Tokyo.

After climbing Mount Rausu with a friend, the man was on his way down the mountain when the incident occurred. The friend reportedly told other climbers nearby, I tried to pull the bear off of him, but it wouldnt budge at all and ended up dragging him away.

Near the location where the man was found, three brown bears—believed to be a mother and her two cubs—were exterminated by hunters. The Hokkaido Research Organization is analyzing DNA from hair and other materials found on the body to determine whether any of these bears were the ones that attacked the man.
