Ishii Akira, a member of the House of Councillors from the Japan Innovation Party, is suspected of fraudulently receiving secretary salaries paid by the government by registering a person with no actual work duties as an official secretary. The Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office’s Special Investigation Department has searched Ishii’s local office in Ibaraki Prefecture and his office in the House of Councillors Members’ Office Building on suspicion of fraud.

The special investigation unit is expected to further investigate the flow of funds related to the secretary’s salary.

The locations being searched are the local office of Representative Ishii in Toride City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and his office at the House of Councillors Members Office Building in Chiyoda Ward, Tokyo.

Around 10:15 a.m., several officers from the Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office’s Special Investigation Department entered the local office.

According to sources, it is suspected that Akira Ishii, a House of Councillors member elected through proportional representation and belonging to Nippon Ishin no Kai, reported a person who did not actually work as an official secretary and fraudulently received the secretarys salary paid by the government.

Public secretaries are special national public servants, and according to the National Diet Law, each member of the Diet can employ up to three of them, with their salaries paid by national funds.

The special investigation unit is expected to question people connected to the office and analyze the materials seized during the search to clarify the flow of funds related to the secretarys salary.

After serving as a member of the Toride City Council and in other positions, I ran as a candidate from the then-Democratic Party in the 2009 House of Representatives election for the proportional representation North Kanto block and was elected for the first time.

Afterwards, in the 2016 House of Councillors election, he ran as a proportional representation candidate for the then Osaka Ishin no Kai and was elected to the House of Councillors for the first time. He was also elected again in the 2022 election.
