During an inspection of production sites in Fukushima Prefecture, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Koizumi indicated that he would consider specific measures to promote the spread of heat-resistant rice varieties, after being asked by rice producers for support to increase such varieties.
小泉農林水産大臣は、生産現場を視察するために福島県を訪れ、このうち福島市ではコメの生産者と意見を交わしました。
Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Koizumi visited Fukushima Prefecture to inspect production sites, and in Fukushima City, he exchanged opinions with rice producers.
この中で小泉大臣は、最近の猛暑に触れたうえで、「高温に対する強靭性を持つために、高温耐性品種に切り替えを進めていく後押しに取り組んでいる」と述べ、農林水産省として、暑さに強い品種が広がるよう促していることを紹介しました。
In this context, Minister Koizumi referred to the recent heat wave and stated, We are working to support the switch to heat-resistant varieties in order to build resilience against high temperatures. He introduced the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries efforts to promote the spread of varieties that are strong against heat.
意見交換はその後、非公開で行われ、出席者によりますと、生産者からは、新たな品種を採用しても栽培方法を変えなければ収穫量を確保できないと訴える声があったということです。
The exchange of opinions was then conducted privately, and according to attendees, some producers voiced concerns that even if they adopt new varieties, they wont be able to secure sufficient yields unless they change their cultivation methods.
このあと小泉大臣は、記者団に対し「高温耐性品種に単純に予算をつけるだけでなく、営農の指導など、きめ細かく進めていく必要があるという声も伺った。
After this, Minister Koizumi told reporters, I have heard voices saying that its not enough to simply allocate a budget for heat-resistant varieties, but that it is also necessary to provide detailed support, such as guidance for farming operations.

また、小泉大臣は夕方には郡山市を訪れ、農地に直接、種もみをまく省力化する手法でコメを生産している現場を視察しました。
In the evening, Minister Koizumi also visited Koriyama City to inspect a site where rice is being produced using a labor-saving method of sowing rice seeds directly onto the farmland.
