The Ministry of Defense has announced that it will deploy two types of long-range missiles, which can also be used as counterstrike capabilities to attack bases in other countries, at locations such as the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force garrisons in Kumamoto City and Shizuoka Prefecture.

Except for naval vessels, this is the first time that the Ministry of Defense has announced the deployment locations of missiles that will also be used for counterstrike capability.

The deployment locations announced are for the improved version of the Type 12 surface-to-ship missile, which has a range of about 1,000 kilometers and can attack ships at sea from land, and the hypervelocity gliding projectile, which has a range of several hundred kilometers and can attack invading forces on remote islands from distant locations on land.

The Ministry of Defense says it will also use these missiles as counterstrike capability to attack enemy bases and other targets.

The improved version of the Type 12 Surface-to-Ship Missile is scheduled to be first deployed to the Ground Self-Defense Forces anti-ship missile regiment at the Kengun Garrison in Kumamoto City in March next year.

In fiscal year 2027, it is planned to deploy them to the Artillery Training Unit at the Ground Self-Defense Force Fuji Garrison in Shizuoka Prefecture, which provides educational support for missile operations.

This missile is being developed so that it can also be launched from naval vessels and fighter jets, and it is planned to be deployed starting in fiscal year 2027 on the escort ship Teruzuki belonging to the Yokosuka base of the Maritime Self-Defense Force and on F-2 fighter jets stationed at the Hyakuri base of the Air Self-Defense Force in Ibaraki Prefecture.

The hypervelocity gliding projectile is scheduled to be deployed to the Artillery Training Unit at the Fuji Garrison in March next year, and to both the Kamifurano Garrison in Hokkaido and the Ebino Garrison in Miyazaki Prefecture of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force in the next fiscal year.

At Kamifurano Garrison and Ebino Garrison, there are plans to newly establish units that will operate missiles.

According to the Ministry of Defense, this deployment has been moved up by one year from the original plan, and it is believed that the aim is to strengthen deterrence against China and others, which have been increasing their activities around the Nansei Islands.
