Due to a series of earthquakes near the Tokara Islands, some children evacuated off the island and entered summer vacation. On Akusekijima in Kagoshima Prefecture, the compulsory education school will start its second semester on September 1.

The number of earthquakes is on a decreasing trend, and all students are expected to be present. The principal said, I want to cherish each and every day.

Earthquake activity has intensified around Akusekijima and Kodakara Island in Toshima Village since June this year, and on July 3rd, a strong tremor with a seismic intensity of lower 6 was observed on Akusekijima.

Due to a series of earthquakes, the children of Akusekijima Gakuen, the islands compulsory education school, temporarily evacuated off the island, and their school life was affected, with classes and the end-of-term ceremony being held online before summer vacation.

The number of earthquakes has been decreasing since late July, and it is said that all the children and students have returned to the island before the start of the second semester.

With the opening ceremony scheduled for September 1, Principal Yoshiro Tobou said, I am truly happy that our ordinary daily life—like doing PE, singing songs together, chatting, and eating school lunches—is coming back.

I want us all to first celebrate the fact that we got through this without a single person getting hurt, he said, expressing his feelings.

From the second semester, one transfer student will join, making the total number of students attending Akusekijima Gakuen 15.

Principal Tomubo expressed concern about whether the earthquake had affected the childrens minds or bodies, and said that he wanted to take the time to watch over each of them carefully. He added, There are still areas where we cant let our guard down, but while ensuring safety in a positive manner, I want to keep the school running day by day, cherishing each and every important day for the children.
