Amid a series of murders in Italy in which the victims were women—so-called femicides—there is growing criticism of Prime Minister Melonis response.

Pamela Jenini 29 years old lives in Milan and has achieved success as a model and entrepreneur. She is also widely known as an influencer.

However, on a night in mid-October, the suspect, Gianluca Soncin 52, her ex-boyfriend, broke into her apartment and attacked her with a knife, causing Ms. Genini to die on the balcony.

When the police arrived at the scene, the suspect was still there and is currently being held in a cell.

He is scheduled to be charged with murder, acts of brutality, surveillance, and criminal conspiracy, but so far he has not yet answered any questions about the case.

According to the monitoring group Non Una Di Meno, which is tackling the issue of femicide in Italy, 72 women, including Ms. Genini, have fallen victim to femicide so far this year.

Most of the incidents were caused by spouses or former lovers, and after this case, four more women, including a 62-year-old and an 80-year-old, were killed. Six other cases suspected to be femicides are also under investigation.

The number of cases that occurred last year was 116, and a similar level has continued in recent years.

Although Ms. Meloni became Italys first female prime minister three years ago, many believe that issues such as violence against women and gender inequality in the workplace have still not been adequately addressed.

According to official statistics, the birth rate in the first seven months of this year decreased by 6.3% compared to the same period last year, and in some cases, womens salaries are up to 40% lower than their male colleagues.

The problem of femicide has existed for decades, and the current administration has enacted anti-stalking laws and strengthened penalties for domestic violence.

However, fundamental measures to prevent crime are still not being adequately implemented.

Recently, a bill restricting sex education from kindergarten through middle school was passed, making Italy one of the few European countries where sex education is not mandatory in public schools.

According to experts, early sex education helps spread knowledge about domestic violence and sexual consent, contributing to crime prevention. However, Prime Minister Meloni justifies restrictions on sex education as a way to prevent the spread of woke gender theory.

In response, the opposition warned that if sex education is not introduced at an early stage, society as a whole will continue to be bound by the patriarchal system of the past.

Hardline opposition lawmakers strongly criticized, saying, While Europe is making progress, only Italy is reverting back to the Middle Ages.

CNN reached out to Prime Minister Melonis office for comment, but did not receive a response.
