昔、
下関の
阿弥陀寺という
お寺に、
芳一という
男が
住んでいました。
Once upon a time, there was a man named Hoichi who lived at a temple called Amidaji in Shimonoseki.

目が
不自由でしたが、びわを
とても上手に
弾きました。
Hoichi was blind, but he was very skilled at playing the biwa.

芳一の
所に
偉い
人の
使いが
来て、びわを
弾いてほしいと
言いました。
One night, a messenger from a certain noble came to Hoichi and asked him to play the biwa.

使いの
後について
行きました。
Hoichi followed the messenger.
きな
家の
中には
たくさんの
人がいて、
芳一はびわを
弾きました。
In a large house filled with many people, Hoichi was playing the biwa.
いていました。
女の
人は「あと2
日間、びわを
弾いてください。
The woman said, Please play the biwa in two days.
ことは
誰にも
話さないでください」と
言いました。
Please dont tell anyone about this.

芳一は
お寺に
帰りました。
The next morning, Hoichi returned to the temple.

人が
芳一を
見に
行くと、
芳一はお
墓の
前でびわを
弾いていました。
When the people from the temple came to see, Hoichi was playing the biwa in front of the grave.
の
人は、びわを
聞いたのは
亡くなった
人の
魂だとわかりました。
The people inside the temple realized that the ones listening to the sound of the koto were the souls of the deceased.
、
芳一の
体に
お経を
書きました。
After that, they wrote sutras on Hoichis body.

なると、
また魂が
来ました。
At night, the souls come again.
の
おかげで、
魂には
芳一の
体が
見えませんでした。
Thanks to the sutras, the spirits couldn’t see Hoichi’s body.

耳は
見えていました。
However, his ears are still visible.
は
耳を
持って
帰りました。
Your soul has taken away my ears.
、
お寺の
人は、
芳一の
耳がなくなっているのを
見て、
かわいそうなことをしたと
思いました。
The next morning, the people at the temple saw that Hoichi had lost his ears and felt very sorry for him.
は「
耳なし
芳一」と
呼ばれるようになりました。
Since then, Hoichi came to be called Hoichi the Earless.
