After graduating from the University of Tokyo, I worked at a trading company, a newspaper company, and a foreign consulting firm before being elected to the House of Representatives for the first time in the 1993 election.

In 2003, under the Koizumi Cabinet, he entered the Cabinet for the first time in his third term as Minister for Okinawa and Northern Territories Affairs and Minister of State for Science and Technology Policy.

In the Abe Cabinet, he served as Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, Minister in charge of Economic Revitalization, and Minister for Foreign Affairs. Within the party, he also held positions such as Chairman of the Policy Research Council and Chairman of the Election Strategy Committee.

When he served as Minister for Economic Revitalization, he negotiated the Japan-U.S. trade agreement with the Trump administration during its first term, and President Trump called him a tough negotiator.
