In the delivery industry, there is a growing trend of delivering a large number of packages to big apartment buildings, which is increasing the burden on delivery workers as they go back and forth between rooms. As a result, there are moves to utilize robots and other solutions.

Of these, Yamato Transport has started an experiment utilizing robots in a large apartment complex in Chiba Prefecture, in cooperation with a South Korean company.

The delivery person will leave the packages together in the apartment building’s delivery locker.

Then, an email is sent to the resident at the delivery address, they enter information such as the desired pickup date and time, and this information is communicated to the robot.

When the specified time arrives, the robot takes the package out of the delivery box, enters the apartment building by unlocking the auto-lock feature, and uses its arm to press the button and move by elevator.

When you arrive at the room, ring the intercom and deliver the package. If leave at door is requested, place it in front of the entrance.

In urban areas with many large apartment buildings, cases where a large number of packages need to be delivered at once are increasing. Delivery workers have to check whether residents are home, unlock the auto-lock system, and repeatedly use the elevator to go back and forth between rooms, making their workload heavier.

The company plans to examine cost-effectiveness and other factors, aiming to put it into practical use next year.

Yamato Transport’s section chief Yohei Miyahara said, “In large apartment buildings, there is a demand for having heavy packages delivered right to the door, and this is a struggle for delivery staff.”

I want to optimally combine people and robots so that things can be received comfortably, he said.

In addition, companies such as Japan Post and Sagawa Express are conducting trials to introduce a system in which, with the cooperation of apartment buildings, parcels are deposited in bulk and delivered to each room by the building manager.
