Just a week ago, Major General Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, who served as the Chief Military Advocate General of Israel, was dedicated to establishing legal order within the military, but is now under criminal investigation and has been arrested in connection with the leak of abuse footage.

The controversial footage reportedly documents inhumane acts, including sexual abuse, committed against Palestinian prisoners at Israels notorious military prison.

Brigadier General Tomer Yershalmi, who had long been targeted by right-wing forces in Israel, fell from grace rapidly, and this quickly developed into a scandal that shook the entire nation.

As a result, interest in the video at the center of the incident gradually faded, and the political aspects of the incident came to be emphasized more.

This issue stems from the fact that in July 2024, the judicial authorities of the Israel Defense Forces IDF launched an investigation into suspicions that soldiers had committed sexual assault against Palestinian prisoners detained near the Sde Teiman military prison during the Gaza conflict.

It has also been reported that about 20 other prisoners are lying face down on the ground at the scene.

The investigation and arrest of the soldiers sparked fierce backlash from right-wing members within Prime Minister Netanyahus coalition government, leading to protests in front of the Sde Teiman military prison and military court.

Israel’s Channel 12 first released footage documenting this abuse in August 2024, but warnings about the dire conditions in this prison had been issued long before.

In May 2024, CNN interviewed three whistleblowers about allegations of abuse at this facility, and the following month, Israeli authorities announced that the prison would be gradually closed.

However, the wave of criticism against the Director of the Military Law Bureau still has not subsided.

On October 29, after Israels attorney general announced the launch of a criminal investigation into information leaks, Major General Tomer Yershalmi was suspended from duty and submitted his resignation two days later.

He acknowledged responsibility for approving the release of the video and stated, I take responsibility for all materials that were leaked to the media from the department.
