The investigation and arrest of the soldiers were met with fierce backlash from right-wing members within Prime Minister Netanyahus coalition government, and protests were held in front of the Sde Teiman military prison and the military court.

This footage, documenting scenes of abuse and first released by Israels Channel 12 in August 2024, had been preceded by warnings about the serious conditions in this prison.

In May 2024, CNN interviewed three whistleblowers about allegations of abuse at this facility, and the following month, Israeli authorities announced that the prison would be gradually closed.

However, criticism against the Chief of the Military Law Bureau still has not subsided.

On October 29, after Israels Attorney General announced the launch of a criminal investigation into information leaks, Major General Tomer Yershalmi was suspended and submitted his resignation two days later.

He acknowledged responsibility for approving the release of the video and declared, I take responsibility for all materials leaked to the media from the department.

In his resignation letter, he emphasized that there are acts that should never be permitted, even against the worst prisoners, and pointed out that the legal officers have faced many personal attacks, slander, and even actual threats, simply for upholding the rule of law within the IDF.

For the right-wing forces in Israeli politics, resignation or investigation alone is not enough.

Immediately after Tomer Yerushalmi resigned, Defense Minister Katz expressed his intention to impose all necessary punitive measures, including stripping him of his military rank, and accused him of being involved in bloody slander against the soldiers.

However, the authenticity of the video footage has not been questioned, and by February 2025, five soldiers had been indicted on charges of prisoner abuse.

The soldiers deny any wrongdoing.

Prime Minister Netanyahu stated that the recent video leak has caused serious damage to Israels international credibility, emphasizing that this is the worst media disaster in Israels history.
