Just before 6 p.m. on the 29th, a passerby reported to the police near the Akiho Watase Bridge over the Sawano River in Hirai, Yamaguchi City, that ``people were being washed away in the river.’’
When police and firefighters searched the area, a man was found submerged at the bottom of the river and was taken to a hospital in a state of cardiac arrest, where he was later pronounced dead.
According to the police, the deceased was a Myanmar man in his 30s living in Yamaguchi City.
Another Burmese man who went into the river to rescue this man also got stuck in the river and was rescued by police, but his injuries were not life-threatening.
The three men who died were eating and drinking on the riverbank and were swept away after entering the river themselves, and police are investigating the details of what happened at the time.
