今年の夏、記録的な熱波に襲われたヨーロッパで暑さが原因で死亡した人が少なくとも1万5000人に上ることが分かりました。　
At least 15,000 people have died from heat-related illnesses in Europe this summer as record-breaking heat waves hit.
WHO＝世界保健機関は7日、今年の夏、ヨーロッパで少なくとも1万5000人が熱中症など暑さが原因で死亡したと明らかにしました。　
WHO = The World Health Organization announced on the 7th that at least 15,000 people had died in Europe this summer due to heat, such as heat stroke.
また、「極端な暑さが心血管疾患や糖尿病などの慢性疾患を悪化させる可能性がある」とも指摘しています。　
They also point out that "excessive heat can exacerbate chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes".
観測史上初めて気温40度超えを記録したイギリスでは3200人以上が死亡したということです。　
More than 3,200 people have died in the UK, where temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius for the first time in history.
記録的な熱波はヨーロッパ干ばつ観測所が「少なくとも過去500年で最悪の干ばつに直面している」と指摘したほどで、各地で川が干上がる様子などが見られました。　
The heat wave was so record-breaking that the European Drought Observatory indicated that "we are facing the worst drought in at least 500 years" and rivers dried up in many places.
WHOは声明で「ヨーロッパは最も温暖化が進んでいる地域で、気候変動に効果的に取り組む必要がある」としています。
"Europe is the warmest region and needs to address the consequences of climate change," the WHO said in a statement.
