The movie National Treasure, which is based on kabuki, has surpassed 10 billion yen in box office revenue just over two months after its release.

It is the first time in 22 years that a live-action Japanese film has surpassed 10 billion yen, making it an exceptional hit.

The film National Treasure depicts the first half of the life of a protagonist born into a yakuza family, who dedicates his life to kabuki and rises to become a Living National Treasure as an onnagata female-role actor.

Toho, the distributor, announced that from the release on June 6th this year until August 17th, over a period of 73 days, the film attracted more than 7.47 million viewers in Japan, with box office revenue exceeding 10.5 billion yen.

This is the fourth live-action Japanese film in history to surpass 10 billion yen at the box office, and its the first time in 22 years since Bayside Shakedown 2: The Movie.

Although it is a lengthy film with a runtime of about three hours, it has become an unusual hit, with word of mouth spreading mainly on social media, thanks to the passionate performances of the lead actor, Ryo Yoshizawa, and others who take on a series of challenging kabuki plays.

Additionally, due to the influence of the movie, interest in kabuki itself is also increasing, and according to Shochiku, which produces kabuki performances, ticket sales for shows at the Kabuki-za theater are also rising.
