The Liberal Democratic Party’s Presidential Election Management Committee has decided to consider having members of the Diet who are requesting an extraordinary presidential election submit their requests in writing.

As soon as the review of the House of Councillors election is completed, we intend to begin the procedures.

On the 19th, the Liberal Democratic Party held a meeting of the Presidential Election Management Committee and began discussions on the procedures for deciding whether or not to hold an extraordinary presidential election, which many had called for at the recent General Meeting of Both Houses of the party.

To hold an extraordinary presidential election, party rules require a request from a majority—172 people—out of the total 295 party-affiliated Diet members and 47 prefectural chapter representatives. However, there has never been a case where an extraordinary presidential election was held without the voluntary resignation of the president.

At the meeting on the 19th, it was decided to consider having members of parliament who wish to hold an extraordinary presidential election submit their requests in writing.

Furthermore, there was an opinion that the prefectural federations should be asked to clarify their intentions through a formal organizational decision.

Chairman Aizawa of the Election Management Committee stated, There must be no flaws in the procedures, and the system design will be carried out carefully and fairly.

The election management committee plans to hold another meeting early next week to specifically discuss matters such as how to submit the documents and whether to disclose the names of the lawmakers who have submitted them.

And as soon as the party leadership completes its review of the House of Councillors election, which is expected to be finalized by the end of this month, they intend to begin the procedures.
