In the case where a 24-year-old woman was killed in a condominium in Kobe, it has been learned from interviews with investigators that the arrested suspect had obtained Shinkansen tickets for round trips between Tokyo, where he lived, and Kobe about a month before the incident.

Masashi Tanimoto, a 35-year-old company employee from Shinjuku, Tokyo, is suspected of stabbing and killing a 24-year-old female company employee with a knife in an elevator of a condominium in Kobe City on the 20th of this month.

On the morning of the 27th, the police searched the company dormitory in Tokyo where the suspect had been living.

The suspect had taken a leave of absence from the company starting on the 17th of this month, but subsequent interviews with investigators revealed that about a month before the incident, in late last month, they had obtained Shinkansen tickets for a round trip between Tokyo Station and Shin-Kobe Station to coincide with the dates of their leave.

Based on the investigation so far, the suspect stayed at a hotel near the crime scene from the 17th of this month, when he arrived in Kobe. On the day of the incident, he is believed to have followed the woman for about 50 minutes as she returned home from work. Security camera footage near the womans workplace captured a person closely resembling the suspect both on the day before and on the day of the incident.

The suspect had been walking around the area near the hotel after arriving in Kobe, and the police are investigating the circumstances leading up to the incident.

According to the National Police Agency, the number of consultations and reports regarding stalking in 2024 was 19,567 cases nationwide. Although this is a slight decrease compared to the previous year, the number still remains high.
