A vote of no confidence against Maki Takubo, the mayor of Ito City in Shizuoka Prefecture, who is suspected of falsifying her academic background, was submitted at the regular city council meeting held on the 1st and was unanimously approved.

The mayor will be forced to decide whether to dissolve the assembly or resign/lose their position, making future actions the focus of attention.

In Ito City, stagnation and confusion in municipal administration continue due to the city councils Article 100 committee investigating suspicions of Mayor Takubos falsification of academic credentials, and there are concerns about the impact on citizens lives, such as delays in drafting the supplementary budget proposal.

Amidst this situation, a motion of no confidence against the mayor was submitted at the regular city council meeting held on the 1st.

As a result of the vote, the no-confidence motion was unanimously passed with all 19 attending members voting in favor.

The mayor attended the city council meeting and observed the discussions, taking notes and so on.

In response to this, the mayor will be required, under the provisions of the Local Autonomy Act, to decide within ten days whether to dissolve the assembly or to resign or forfeit their position.

In addition, at todays city council meeting, a vote was held on whether to file a criminal complaint for violation of the Local Autonomy Act, on the grounds that the mayor refused to appear at the witness examination in July of this year and to submit a document considered to be a diploma. The motion was unanimously approved.

After that, it is said that a letter of accusation against the mayor was submitted to the police.

We will respectfully accept the decision of the assembly and will consider it accordingly.

I would like to take this matter back with me and consider its contents.

If the mayor resigns or loses their position, a mayoral election will be held within 50 days.

If the council is dissolved, a city council election will be held within 40 days.

There is a possibility that the newly elected city council members may submit another vote of no confidence.

According to the Local Autonomy Act, if, after dissolution, at the first assembly, two-thirds or more of the members are present and a majority votes in favor of another no-confidence motion, the mayor will be dismissed.

A mayoral election will be held within 50 days after the mayor loses their position.
