Mr. Takeshi Niinami, who resigned as chairman of Suntory Holdings, will hold a press conference as the representative director of the Japan Association of Corporate Executives on the afternoon of the 3rd.

Mr. Niinami, who served as the top executive at Suntory Holdings for over 10 years, resigned as chairman as of the 1st due to being investigated by the police over the purchase of supplements.

Mr. Shinami has been serving as the representative secretary of the Japan Association of Corporate Executives since 2023, and is scheduled to attend the regular press conference on the afternoon of the 3rd.

Mr. Sina explained to Suntory that he purchased the supplements with the understanding that it was legal, and as for the Japan Association of Corporate Executives, he has not expressed his intention to resign as representative director so far.

Among business circles, there is an opinion that Suntorys decision is appropriate in terms of governance, and it may be difficult for him to continue as the representative secretary-general. The focus will be on how Mr. Shin-nami himself explains his responsibility and future course of action at the press conference.

No illegal products were found during the search of the home, and the police are carefully investigating the circumstances.

Suntory Holdings announced that Mr. Shinro resigned as chairman as of September 1, after revealing that he was investigated by the police in August regarding the purchase of supplements.

According to investigators, a product containing THC, a cannabis component regulated in Japan, was sent to Fukuoka Prefecture by an acquaintance of Mr. Niina, who lives in the United States. The Fukuoka Prefectural Police began their investigation after receiving information from the Moji Customs Office in Kitakyushu City.

A suspect living in Fukuoka Prefecture was arrested on suspicion of violating the Narcotics Control Act for smuggling products, and during the investigation, it was discovered that the destination to which the suspect was attempting to send the products was the home of Mr. Shinro in Tokyo.

Fukuoka Prefectural Police believe that the supplements purchased by Mr. Niina contained cannabis components, and suspect that purchasing them from overseas may constitute smuggling. On August 22, they searched Mr. Niina’s residence.

According to investigators, Mr. Niromi has explained to the police during their voluntary questioning that he was not aware of any illegality.

In addition, no illegal products were found during the search of his home, and it is reported that no substances suspected of being drugs were detected in Mr. Shinrō.

In the United States, products containing the cannabis component THC are used as supplements for their pain-relieving effects. However, according to the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, THC has hallucinogenic effects and is therefore regulated in Japan.

The police are carefully investigating whether there was any awareness of illegality and the detailed circumstances.
