The movie Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc greatly exceeded expectations at the North American box office in October, taking the number one spot in weekend box office revenue.

According to preliminary estimates by Hollywood industry publications, the films opening box office reached $17.2 million approximately 2.6 billion yen at an exchange rate of 153 yen to the dollar, marking a very strong start for October, a month when many major films are released.

In recent years, it has been rare for anime films to achieve such success in the North American market, and this work became the latest example of that.

Originally, the opening box office revenue for Chainsaw Man was expected to be between $7 million and $10 million about 1.07 to 1.53 billion yen, but thanks to the success of the advance screenings, this figure has been revised upward to $11 million to $15 million about 1.68 to 2.3 billion yen.

However, actual sales far exceeded this adjusted amount, resulting in an unexpected outcome for those involved.

This work has been released in Japan and other Asian countries since September, and its box office revenue has reached at least $61 million approximately 9.3 billion yen, excluding North America.

Distribution is handled by Crunchyroll, a subsidiary of Sony.

Previously, Crunchyroll achieved an opening box office revenue of $70 million about 10.7 billion yen in North America with Demon Slayer: Mugen Train, breaking the previous box office record for an animated film.

Chainsaw Man has received extremely high praise from audiences, earning an A rating on CinemaScore and nearly perfect scores from both viewers and critics on the international review site Rotten Tomatoes.

Thanks to these favorable reviews, this became the second most commercially successful work for Sony and Crunchyroll this year.

Crunchyroll is an anime distribution and streaming company that Sony acquired from AT&T in 2021 for $1.175 billion approximately ¥179.8 billion.

In September, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle Arc was released and immediately took the top spot in the box office rankings, breaking the record for the highest opening weekend box office for an anime film in North America for the first time in decades.
