The so-called 2+2 meeting of foreign and defense ministers from Japan and Australia was held in Tokyo, and with the increasing military activities of China in mind, both sides agreed to further expand security cooperation, including enhancing joint training between the Self-Defense Forces and the Australian military.

On that basis, they agreed to further expand security cooperation by conducting more advanced training through the use of the Reciprocal Access Agreement between the Self-Defense Forces and the Australian military, and by strengthening collaboration in areas of economic security such as critical minerals and energy.

Additionally, it was confirmed that cooperation will move forward toward realizing the proposal selected by Australia to jointly develop its planned new frigate based on the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Forces latest escort ship.

Furthermore, it was also confirmed that, in the event of an emergency such as a crisis in a third country requiring the evacuation of citizens from both countries, a memorandum of cooperation would be signed, and a joint statement including these points was issued.
