Due to the influx of warm, moist air toward the front, extremely heavy rain is falling locally on the Sea of Japan side from Tohoku to western Japan.

In the next few hours, there is a risk of heavy rain. Please continue to be extremely cautious of landslides, and also be on alert for flooding in low-lying areas and rising or overflowing rivers.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, warm and humid air is flowing toward the front moving south over the Sea of Japan, causing extremely unstable atmospheric conditions and developed rain clouds over the Sea of Japan side from Tohoku to western Japan.

At Niigata Airport, 63—the highest number since statistics began—were recorded in one hour until just after 8 a.m.

In addition to very heavy rainfall of 5 millimeters, a rain gauge installed by Ishikawa Prefecture in Tsubata Town observed 50 millimeters of very heavy rain in one hour until 8 a.m.

The amount of rainfall in the 24 hours up to 8 a.m. reached 211 millimeters in Takane, Murakami City, Niigata Prefecture, which is equivalent to the average rainfall for the entire month of September, making it a heavy downpour.

Due to the rain that has fallen so far, there are areas in Niigata and Ishikawa prefectures where landslide warning information has been issued, as the risk of landslides is extremely high.

The front is expected to gradually move southward and remain almost stationary near Honshu through the 9th. From the Sea of Japan side of Tohoku to Hokuriku, there is a risk of heavy rain accompanied by thunder over the next few hours, and on the Sea of Japan side of western Japan, there may be heavy rain with thunder tonight.

The amount of rainfall in the 24 hours until the morning of the 9th is expected to be up to 120 millimeters in Niigata Prefecture, the Hokuriku region, and the Chugoku region.

There are areas from the Sea of Japan side of the Tohoku region to Hokuriku where heavy rain has already fallen and the ground has become unstable.

The Japan Meteorological Agency is urging people to be extremely vigilant for landslides, as well as to be on alert for flooding in low-lying areas, rising river levels, and river overflows, and to watch out for severe gusts such as lightning and tornadoes.
