The family of a new female employee who had worked at a cosmetics manufacturer claimed that her suicide was caused by the presidents power harassment. In response, as a result of mediation, the Tokyo District Court issued a decision in which the company acknowledged responsibility, apologized, and agreed to pay 150 million yen.

The decision also included the unusual measure of the president resigning.

According to the bereaved familys lawyer and others, Ms. Satomi, who joined the cosmetics manufacturer D-UP, headquartered in Minato Ward, Tokyo, in April 2021, was reprimanded by the company president during a long interview in December of that year, being told things like Dont underestimate adults. As a result, she was diagnosed with depression and took a leave of absence.

After that, Satomi attempted suicide and passed away two years ago at the age of 25 without regaining consciousness. Her parents filed a lawsuit against the company and the president, claiming that the president’s power harassment was the cause.

The trial moved to mediation procedures, and on the 9th, Judge Emi Matsushita of the Tokyo District Court issued a decision in which the company admitted that the presidents power harassment led to the suicide, offered a deep apology, and agreed to pay 150 million yen.

Additionally, the decision included the unusual content of the president resigning, and according to the company, President Mitsuru Sakai stepped down as of the 10th.

The decision was finalized as neither party filed an objection.

At the press conference, Satomis older sister said, I wanted the president to apologize while she was still alive.

Satomi was a hard worker and put her heart into the things she loved.

I hope people will stop doing things that crush those who are working hard, and that society will become one that warmly watches over them, they said.

D-UP President Sakai resigns D-UP released a statement on its company website, apologizing by saying, We sincerely apologize to the deceased former employee and their family. The company also announced that President Mitsuru Sakai resigned as of the 10th.

And, in order to prevent recurrence, they will take necessary measures such as reviewing harassment prevention regulations, conducting training for managers and all employees, and establishing external consultation and reporting hotlines. They stated, We will work to review and improve our internal systems and workplace environment.
