Due to the influence of the autumn rain front, the atmosphere is extremely unstable over a wide area from Tohoku to Kyushu, and heavy rain is falling intermittently.

The front will slowly move southward through the night of the 18th, and there is a risk of localized heavy rain not only on the Sea of Japan side such as Sanin and Hokuriku, but also on the Pacific side including Kanto. Caution is needed for flooding in low-lying areas and landslides.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, warm and moist air is flowing toward the autumn rain front stretching from the Sea of Japan to the Tohoku region, causing extremely unstable atmospheric conditions over a wide area from Tohoku to Kyushu.

During this time, developed rain clouds covered a wide area including Niigata Prefecture, the Hokuriku region, the Chugoku region, and Kyushu. In the one hour up to 5 a.m., 43 mm of heavy rain fell in Gotsu City, Shimane Prefecture, and 35 mm of heavy rain was observed by a rain gauge installed by Amakusa City in Kumamoto Prefecture.

Due to the rain that has fallen so far, the risk of landslides is extremely high in Niigata and Yamagata prefectures, and landslide warning information has been issued in some areas. Strict caution against landslides is necessary.

The front is expected to slowly move southward toward the Pacific side through the night of the 18th, bringing the risk of localized heavy rain on the Sea of Japan side, including Sanin, Hokuriku, and Niigata Prefecture. In addition, the area of rainfall is expected to expand on the Pacific side, including Kanto.

In eastern and western Japan, there is a risk of extremely heavy localized rainfall of over 50 millimeters per hour. The expected rainfall in the 24 hours up to the morning of the 19th is up to 120 millimeters in the Chugoku region, 100 millimeters in the Kanto-Koshinetsu, Hokuriku, and northern Kyushu regions, and 80 millimeters in the Tohoku region.

The Japan Meteorological Agency is urging people to be on alert for flooding in low-lying areas and underground facilities, rising and overflowing rivers, and landslides, as well as to watch out for lightning, tornadoes, strong gusts of wind, and hail.

While the heat wave continues, lingering summer heat is also expected on the 18th, with daytime high temperatures forecasted to reach 37°C in Kumagaya City, Saitama Prefecture and Shizuoka City, 36°C in central Tokyo, Maebashi City, and Kofu City, and 35°C in Yokohama City and Mito City, among others.

If the temperature in central Tokyo reaches 35 degrees or higher, it will be the latest extremely hot day on record, matching last year.

A Heatstroke Alert has been issued in nine prefectures from the Kanto region to Shikoku, as the risk of heatstroke is extremely high.
