The Imperial Household Agency has completed the Official Record of Empress Kōjun, a chronicle of the activities of Empress Kōjun, consort of Emperor Shōwa, which it had been compiling for 17 years, and presented it to Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress as well as the Emperor Emeritus and Empress Emerita.

香淳皇后は明治36年に皇族だった久邇宮家に生まれ、20歳のときに当時皇太子だった昭和天皇と結婚し、平成12年に97歳で亡くなりました。
Empress Kōjun was born into the imperial Kuninomiya family in 1903, married the then-Crown Prince later Emperor Shōwa at the age of 20, and passed away in 2000 at the age of 97.
香淳皇后実録は、皇后としての日々の活動や生涯を後世に伝えるため、客観的な資料をもとに日誌のような形で年代順に記した記録集で、宮内庁は平成20年4月から資料の収集を始め、17年かけて完成させました。
The Empress Kōjuns Official Records is a chronologically organized collection of records, written in a diary-like format based on objective materials, to convey the daily activities and life of the Empress to future generations. The Imperial Household Agency began collecting materials in April 2008 and completed the compilation over a period of 17 years.
分量は目次や凡例を合わせて13冊、合わせて3800ページ余りで、宮内庁の西村長官から18日夜、天皇皇后両陛下に、19日午前、上皇ご夫妻に、それぞれ和とじされたものが奉呈されました。
The total volume, including the table of contents and legends, comes to 13 books and over 3,800 pages. On the night of the 18th, Imperial Household Agency Director Nishimura presented the bound volumes to Their Majesties the Emperor and Empress, and on the morning of the 19th, to the Emperor Emeritus and Empress Emerita.
「香淳皇后実録」は、宮内庁の公文書や側近の日誌などおよそ">およそ1500件の資料や、宮内庁の元職員ら30人への聞き取りをもとに編さんされ、人件費を除きおよそ5600万円の費用がかかったということです。
The Kojun Empress Official Record was compiled based on approximately 1,500 materials, including official documents from the Imperial Household Agency and diaries of close aides, as well as interviews with 30 former staff members of the Imperial Household Agency. It is said that, excluding personnel costs, the compilation cost about 56 million yen.
内容は来月9日に公開され、歴代の天皇や皇后の実録では初めて、宮内庁のホームページに掲載される予定です。
The contents will be released on the 9th of next month, and for the first time in the official records of successive emperors and empresses, they are scheduled to be published on the Imperial Household Agencys website.
日誌のような形で年代順に記した記録集
「天皇実録」や「皇后実録」は、歴代の天皇や皇后の日々の活動や生涯などを後世に伝えるため、客観的な資料をもとに、日誌のような形で年代順に記した記録集です。
The Emperors Official Records and Empresss Official Records, which are collections of records written in chronological order like a diary, are compilations written in a diary-like format based on objective materials, in order to convey the daily activities and lives of successive emperors and empresses to future generations.
「天皇実録」は、「天皇紀」と呼ばれることもあり、明治になってから、孝明天皇以降の天皇の記録集が作られています。
The Imperial Chronicles, also known as the Chronicles of the Emperors, began to be compiled after the Meiji era, documenting the records of emperors from Emperor Kōmei onward.
このうち「昭和天皇実録」は、宮内庁が24年余りの歳月をかけて、平成26年に完成させました。
Of these, the Official Record of Emperor Showa was completed by the Imperial Household Agency in 2014 after more than 24 years of work.
「皇后実録」としては、
▽昭和40年に、明治天皇の后の昭憲皇太后の
▽昭和34年には、大正天皇の后の貞明皇后の実録がそれぞれ完成しました。
As for the Empresss Official Records, the official record of Empress Shoken, consort of Emperor Meiji, was completed in 1965, and the official record of Empress Teimei, consort of Emperor Taisho, was completed in 1959.
一方、昭和11年には、明治より前の天皇や皇后などについてまとめた実録も作られています。
On the other hand, in 1936, official records were also compiled about emperors, empresses, and others from before the Meiji era.
香淳皇后とは
香淳皇后は明治36年、皇族だった久邇宮家に生まれ、良子と名付けられました。
Who is Empress Kōjun? Empress Kōjun was born in 1903 into the Kuninomiya family, who were members of the imperial family, and was named Nagako.
大正7年、学習院女学部に在学していた14歳の時に、当時、皇太子だった昭和天皇との結婚が内定し、大正13年、20歳の時に結婚しました。
In 1918, when she was 14 years old and attending the Gakushuin Girls School, her engagement to the then-Crown Prince, later Emperor Showa, was decided, and in 1924, at the age of 20, she married him.
2年後に大正天皇が亡くなり、昭和天皇の即位に伴って皇后になりました。
Two years later, Emperor Taisho passed away, and with the accession of Emperor Showa, she became Empress.
上皇さまや常陸宮さまなど7人のお子さまをもうけました。
They had seven children, including the Emperor Emeritus and Prince Hitachi.
戦前、戦中の激動の時を過ごし、戦後は象徴の立場となった昭和天皇とともに、国民体育大会や植樹祭で各地を訪ねたほか、日本赤十字社の名誉総裁に皇后として初めて就任し、医療や福祉にも力を注ぎました。
Before the war and during the turbulent times of the war, she spent her days alongside Emperor Showa, who later became a symbol after the war. Together, they visited various regions for events such as the National Sports Festival and tree-planting ceremonies. She also became the first Empress to serve as Honorary President of the Japanese Red Cross Society, dedicating herself to healthcare and welfare.
国際親善の面でも、昭和46年にヨーロッパを、昭和50年にアメリカを訪問し、香淳皇后がほほえむ姿は「エンプレス・スマイル」、「皇后のほほえみ」と呼ばれて行く先々で話題となりました。
In terms of international goodwill, she visited Europe in 1971 and the United States in 1975, and wherever she went, Empress Kōjun’s smiling demeanor was called the “Empress Smile” or “the Empress’s smile,” becoming a topic of conversation.
また、日本画や書道、歌道などの多彩な趣味を持ち、画集や歌集が出版されたり、作品展が開かれたりもしました。
He also had a wide range of hobbies, such as Japanese painting, calligraphy, and poetry, with collections of his paintings and poems being published and exhibitions of his works being held.
高齢となってからは、腰を痛めるなどしたため外出が少なくなり、昭和64年1月に昭和天皇が亡くなったあとは、皇太后として皇居のお住まいで穏やかな日々を過ごしました。
After becoming elderly and suffering from back pain, she went out less frequently, and after Emperor Showa passed away in January of Showa 64 1989, she spent peaceful days as Empress Dowager at her residence in the Imperial Palace.
平成12年、老衰のため、97年の生涯を終えました。
In the year 2000, he passed away from old age at the age of 97.
確かな記録の残る歴代の皇后では最も長寿で、皇后だった年月も62年余りと最も長くなりました。
She was the longest-lived empress consort on record, and also held the position for over 62 years, making her the longest-serving empress consort.
「香淳皇后」は追号と呼ばれるおくり名で、美しいとか優雅という意味をもつ「香」の字に、情け深いという意味の「淳し」という字を組み合わせたものです。
The title Kōjun Kōgō is a posthumous name, with Kō meaning beautiful or elegant, and jun from junshi meaning compassionate or kind-hearted.
生前の人柄や芸術への関心の高さが考慮されて決められました。
The decision was made based on their personality during their lifetime and their strong interest in the arts.
宮内庁長官「理解深まること期待」
「香淳皇后実録」の奉呈にあたって、宮内庁の西村泰彦長官は「本実録を通して、激動の時代を昭和天皇のおそばにあって全国民と共に歩まれた香淳皇后の御生涯について理解が深まることを期待している」との所感を出しました。
Imperial Household Agency Chief: Hoping for Deeper Understanding Upon the presentation of the Official Record of Empress Kōjun, Yasuhiko Nishimura, Chief of the Imperial Household Agency, expressed his thoughts, saying, Through this official record, I hope that people will gain a deeper understanding of the life of Empress Kōjun, who, during turbulent times, walked alongside Emperor Shōwa and the entire nation.
