It has been discovered that numerous videos, apparently created by AI claiming to be doctors whose existence cannot be verified and discussing medical or health-related information, have been posted on the video-sharing site YouTube.

The Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has stated, If someone without a medical license created the video, there is a possibility that it violates the Medical Practitioners Act.

These videos posted on YouTube appear to have their visuals and audio created by AI, and feature people claiming to be former university hospital department heads or heart disease specialists talking about secrets to longevity and health. More than 100 such videos have been posted in total.

Of the 50 people who appeared in videos with over 10,000 views, a search using a national system that can verify medical licenses by name found that about 60%, or 31 people, could not be identified as having a license.

This system sometimes has difficulty distinguishing between doctors with the same name, but when we asked the university hospital about one person who claimed to be a former department head and whose name was registered, they responded that this person had never been affiliated with the hospital.

Also, when an expert reviewed one of the videos about heart disease, it was found to contain medically inaccurate information, and following it as is could have a negative impact on treatment.

NHK contacted the uploader of this video for an interview, but as of the 19th, there has been no response. Some of these videos have been removed from public view by the site.

The Medical Affairs Division of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare said, We are not aware of the details of the video, but there is a possibility that it violates the Medical Practitioners Act, which stipulates that people who are not doctors must not call themselves doctors.

Doctors are legally required to report their workplaces and other information to the government every two years, and the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has made a system publicly available that allows people to check if someone has a medical license by entering their name and other details based on this reported information.

When I searched for the name of the person who claimed to be an “81-year-old active cardiologist” in the video using this system, I couldn’t find anyone matching that description.

We also interviewed the two organizations that certify specialists involved in heart disease, the Japanese Circulation Society and the Board Certification Organization of Cardiovascular Surgery Specialists, but neither had a specialist with that name.

In addition, there were no corresponding individuals in the national system for the 100-year-old active physician or the authority in psychiatry, and although there was a person with the same name as the former head of the Endocrinology Department at the University of Tokyo Hospital registered in the national system, when the University of Tokyo Hospital was contacted, they stated that there has never been a physician with that name who served as the head of the Endocrinology Department.

In a video featuring an “81-year-old active cardiologist,” it is recommended to immediately chew and take medication that makes blood less likely to clot if you have chest pain. However, according to Professor Masato Nakamura from the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Toho University School of Medicine, if the condition is something other than a myocardial infarction, taking such medication could actually worsen the symptoms.

Professor Nakamura said, Some of the videos exaggerate the fear of illness and are designed to instill a sense of fear.

If the information is not accurate, it will only confuse and unsettle people, so if you have symptoms such as chest pain, it is important to visit a medical institution as soon as possible, he said.

Each video is about 20 to 50 minutes long, and most of them show images of people in white coats while presenting information about health and longevity.

Expert Verification It appears to have been created by generative AI. When we asked Professor Isao Echizen of the National Institute of Informatics, an expert in generative AI, to examine these videos, he noted that there were unnatural aspects in the Japanese language and audio, unclear features such as the position of buttons on lab coats and the contours of faces in the footage, and that a large number of videos in the same format had been posted. Based on these factors, he concluded that the videos were likely created by generative AI.

With AI, you can create a wide variety of videos, content, and even synthesized voices at low cost and in a short period of time without much human effort.

There is a possibility that viewers may mistakenly believe that he is a real doctor, and since the content deals with medical and health information, it is extremely dangerous and problematic, he pointed out.

On top of that, as a countermeasure that viewers can take, it’s important to watch out for things like repeated short clips or strange voice synthesis in videos, and to have an eye for recognizing, “This might be fake information created by AI.”

It is important to examine sources yourself and not take things at face value, he said.

Google responded to the interview by saying, YouTube has established guidelines, and the stated policies apply to all types of content on the platform, regardless of how the content is generated.

The channel containing the reported video has been suspended due to confirmed violations of our spam, deceptive practices, and fraud policies, they commented.
