The IPC International Paralympic Committee has fully lifted the suspension of the Paralympic Committees of Russia, which continues its military invasion of Ukraine, and its ally Belarus, announcing that athletes from both countries will be able to participate as national representatives in next years Milan-Cortina Paralympics.

On the other hand, the IOC International Olympic Committee has stated that athletes from both countries will only be allowed to participate in the Milan-Cortina Olympics as individual athletes with neutral status, resulting in a difference in responses.

Three years ago, at the 2022 Beijing Paralympics, the IPC did not allow athletes from Russia and its ally Belarus to participate due to the military invasion of Ukraine that began just before the opening. Afterwards, the Paralympic committees of both countries were suspended indefinitely.

However, in response to the appeal, at the general meeting in September 2023, the decision was eased to a partial suspension of eligibility, and for the 2024 Paris Games, Russian and Belarusian athletes were allowed to participate as neutral individual athletes, not representing their countries, with the use of national anthems and flags prohibited.

And at the general meeting held in South Korea on the 27th, the IPC announced that it had once again deliberated on the membership status of the Russian and Belarusian Paralympic Committees and decided to completely lift their suspension.

The IPC responded to NHKs inquiry by stating that athletes from both countries will be able to participate in next years Milan-Cortina Games without any restrictions, making it clear that they can compete as representatives of their countries.

On the other hand, at the board meeting on the 19th of this month, the IOC decided to allow athletes from both countries to participate in next February’s Milan-Cortina Olympics only as “individual athletes with neutral status,” resulting in a different approach between the Paralympics and the Olympics.
