The championship playoff, which was a match between two yokozuna for the first time in 16 years, ended with Oonosato winning by yoritaoshi frontal crush out as ruled by the referee, despite some confusion at the edge of the ring and a judges conference, earning his fifth championship in two tournaments.

大の里は今場所、4日目に平幕の伯桜鵬に金星を許したものの、身長1メートル92センチ、体重187キロの体格から馬力を生かして前に出る相撲が抜群でした。
Although Onosato allowed the rank-and-file wrestler Hakuhoryu to earn a gold star on Day 4 of this tournament, his sumo, making full use of his 1.92-meter height and 187-kilogram weight to push forward with power, was outstanding.
11日目まで単独トップだった豊昇龍が終盤に連敗する中、大の里は5日目以降、不戦勝を含めて10連勝と集中力を切らしませんでした。
While Hoshoryu, who had been the sole leader until Day 11, suffered consecutive losses in the final stages, Oonosato maintained his focus and achieved ten consecutive wins, including a default victory, from Day 5 onwards.
千秋楽の結びの一番ではこれまで2勝6敗と負け越している豊昇龍に敗れましたが、25歳の東の横綱が最後に横綱どうしの決定戦を制しました。
In the final bout of the last day, he was defeated by Hoshoryu, against whom he had a losing record of 2 wins and 6 losses, but the 25-year-old Yokozuna from the East ultimately won the decisive match between the two Yokozuna.
