Two years ago, during a tour to see the wreckage of the luxury liner Titanic, a submersible was crushed by water pressure, resulting in the deaths of five people on board. Regarding this incident, the U.S. Coast Guards investigative committee has compiled a final report pointing out that structural defects in the submersible and a corporate culture at the operating company that neglected safety were the causes of the accident.
おととし6月、大西洋沖で氷山に衝突して沈没した豪華客船タイタニック号の残骸を海底まで見に行くツアー中に、潜水艇「タイタン」が水圧でつぶれて乗っていた5人が死亡しました。
In June two years ago, during a tour to see the wreckage of the luxury liner Titanic, which sank after hitting an iceberg off the Atlantic coast, the submersible Titan was crushed by water pressure, resulting in the deaths of all five people on board.
事故の原因究明にあたってきたアメリカの沿岸警備隊の調査委員会は5日、300ページ余りにわたる最終報告書を公表しました。
The U.S. Coast Guard investigation committee, which has been working to determine the cause of the accident, released its final report of over 300 pages on the 5th.
この中では、事故を起こした潜水艇について、炭素繊維でできた船体に硬さや厚みなどの構造的な欠陥があったうえに、事故以前のトラブルで船体に異変が生じていたのに、詳細な検査をせず、使い続けていたと指摘しました。
In this context, it was pointed out that the submersible that had the accident had structural defects such as insufficient rigidity and thickness in its carbon fiber hull, and despite abnormalities having occurred in the hull due to previous troubles before the accident, it continued to be used without a thorough inspection.
また、観光目的のツアーにもかかわらず、安全規制を回避するため、乗客を専門調査員と偽って報告したり、安全上の課題を指摘しようとした従業員らを解雇したりするなど、安全を軽視する運営会社の企業風土に問題があったとしています。
Also, despite being a tour for sightseeing purposes, the operating company is said to have had a problematic corporate culture that neglected safety, such as falsely reporting passengers as professional investigators to circumvent safety regulations and firing employees who tried to point out safety issues.
そのうえで、関係当局が連携してより早く介入していれば、事故は防げた可能性があると結論づけました。
On top of that, it concluded that if the relevant authorities had coordinated and intervened sooner, the accident might have been prevented.
