JR East started the nation’s first automatic BRT operation
JR東日本は5日、全国で初めてBRT（バス高速輸送システム）の自動運転を始めました
On the 5th, JR East began autonomous driving of the BRT (Bus Rapid Transit System) for the first time in Japan.
JR East’s Kesennuma Line has maintained and operated a BRT dedicated road on the tracks damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake.
Autonomous driving uses a sensor to detect magnetic markers embedded in the road while driving, and the maximum speed is 60 kilometers per hour.
On the 5th, we started driving 4.8 kilometers between Yanaizu and Rikuzen-Yokoyama, as safety was confirmed in the demonstration experiment.
Currently, drivers are on board, but in the future we are looking at unmanned operation, with the aim of resolving the shortage of drivers due to the declining birthrate and aging population.
Because BRT costs less than railways and can ensure punctuality, it is attracting attention as an alternative to loss-making local railways.
