In the early hours of the 2nd, Japan time, a major eruption occurred at a volcano in Indonesia.

The Japan Meteorological Agency is investigating whether the eruption has caused a tsunami or any effects on Japan, but as of 8:30 a.m., no significant changes in sea level have been observed at monitoring stations in Japan or overseas.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, at around 2:10 a.m. Japan time on the 2nd, a large-scale eruption occurred at Indonesia’s Lewotobi volcano, with the volcanic plume rising to about 19,000 meters.

When a large-scale eruption occurs, tsunamis caused by pressure waves can sometimes happen.

In the event that a tsunami generated by this eruption reaches Japan, it is expected to arrive as early as around 5:30 a.m. on the 2nd in Okinawa Prefecture. However, as of 8:30 a.m., no significant changes in sea level have been observed at monitoring points in Japan or overseas.

The Japan Meteorological Agency continues to investigate the impact on Japan and urges people to pay attention to future updates.

According to the website of the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History in the United States, which conducts research on volcanoes around the world, Lewotobi Volcano is a volcano approximately 1,700 meters high located in the eastern part of Flores Island, Indonesia.

It consists of two mountains, and among them, Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki experienced a major eruption last November that resulted in casualties. In addition, eruptions have continued to occur frequently from March to July this year, indicating ongoing volcanic activity.

In all previous eruptions, there has been no impact from tsunamis on Japan.

At this volcano, following the eruption on July 7, there was also a large-scale eruption on August 1.

The Volcanic Geology Disaster Countermeasures Bureau raised the alert level to the highest level in mid-June this year, as the volcanic activity of this volcano has become more active, and called on nearby residents to be on alert.
