This year marks 80 years since the atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki, and it has been discovered that there is video footage taken before the bombing of a nationally treasured temple in Nagasaki City that was lost to the atomic bomb.

The appearance of the temple had been confirmed through photos, but this is the first time a video has been found. Experts say, Now we can see its former state in three dimensions, making this a first-class source of information.

What remained was a 41-second black and white video taken around 1930 Showa 5 of Fukusaiji, a Tang-style temple in Nagasaki City that was designated a National Treasure.

It was found among the films shot by the kabuki actor Nakamura Shichiku II, who was active from the late Meiji to the Showa period, and donated to NHK.

Fukusaiji Temple was founded about 400 years ago, in the 5th year of the Kanei era. It is known for having hosted Sakamoto Ryoma and Katsu Kaishu during the late Edo period, and was designated a National Treasure in 1927 Showa 2.

In the video, in addition to the exterior of the temple, you can also see the stone lantern that miraculously remains within the temple grounds despite the damage from the atomic bomb, visible beyond the front gate.

According to Professor Emeritus Junichi Himeno of Nagasaki University, the appearance of Fukusai-ji Temple had been confirmed through photographs and postcards, but this is the first time that a video has been found.

Professor Emeritus Himeno said, The significance of being able to view the once phantom Fukusai-ji Temple in three dimensions is immense; it is a first-class resource.

As the number of atomic bomb survivors continues to decrease, being able to time-slip back 80 years was truly thanks to the video, and I can only feel grateful, they said.

I feel that the reason such footage has appeared this time is to convey the fear that something so magnificent can disappear in an instant.
