As of January 1st this year, Japans total population was approximately 124.33 million, which is over 550,000 fewer than last year.

Of these, the Japanese population is just over 120.65 million, marking a decrease for the 16th consecutive year. For the first time since the survey began, the annual decrease exceeded 900,000 people, which is the largest ever.

A list by prefecture is provided later in the article.

According to a summary by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, as of January 1st this year, Japans total population, including foreigners, based on the Basic Resident Register, was 124,330,690.

By prefecture, Tokyo has the largest population with 14,002,534 people, followed by Kanagawa with 9,202,559, Osaka with 8,771,961, Aichi with 7,483,755, and Saitama with 7,374,294, among others.

On the other hand, the lowest is Tottori Prefecture with 534,003 people, followed by Shimane Prefecture with 642,590 people, Kochi Prefecture with 664,863 people, Tokushima Prefecture with 700,409 people, and Fukui Prefecture with 746,690 people, among others.

Compared to the previous year, the population increased only in Tokyo and Chiba Prefecture, while it decreased in the other 45 prefectures.

Since the investigation began in 1968, this is the first time that the annual decrease has exceeded 900,000 people, marking the largest decrease both in number and in rate.

The Japanese population has been declining for 16 consecutive years since peaking at over 127.07 million in 2009 Heisei 21.

Last year, the number of Japanese people born was 687,689, the lowest since the survey began in 1979, while the number of deaths reached a record high of 1,599,850.

As a result, the number of people who died exceeded those who were born, resulting in a natural decrease of 912,161 people, which is the largest ever recorded.

Tokyo was the only prefecture where the Japanese population increased compared to the previous year, with an increase of 16,825 people.

All of the other 46 prefectures saw a decrease in population.

The population of foreigners increased in all 47 prefectures.

The largest population increase was in Tokyo with 73,807 people, followed by Osaka Prefecture with 31,549 people, and Saitama Prefecture with 27,422 people, among others.
