On the night of the 15th, just after 10 p.m., smoke was seen coming from beneath a car on the Tokaido Shinkansens Kodama train. JR responded by having passengers disembark at Gifu-Hashima Station and transfer to a following Shinkansen.

According to JR Central, the Tokaido Shinkansen is operating as usual from the first train on the 16th.

According to JR Central and the police, shortly after 10 p.m. on the 15th, on the up line between Maibara Station and Gifu-Hashima Station, the conductor of the Kodama No. 764 bound for Shizuoka from Shin-Osaka noticed a burning smell, so the train stopped at Gifu-Hashima Station for inspection. There, white smoke was found coming from under car No. 9, and the fire department was notified.

JR reportedly had about 250 passengers disembark at Gifu-Hashima Station, canceled the operation of Kodama No. 764, and temporarily arranged for the following Nozomi train to stop at Gifu-Hashima Station so that passengers could transfer.

No one was injured, but one passenger complained of a headache. In addition, subsequent Shinkansen trains were delayed by up to 52 minutes, affecting approximately 3,800 passengers.

According to the fire department, it was confirmed that there was also fire coming from underneath the vehicle. As a result of firefighting efforts, the fire was extinguished about two hours later. JR is now conducting a detailed inspection of the vehicle to investigate the cause.
