A man in his twenties who was attacked by a brown bear while climbing Mount Rausu in Shari Town on the Shiretoko Peninsula in Hokkaido was found dead on the 15th.

Three brown bears, believed to be a mother and her cubs, that were at the location where the man was found, were killed by hunters.

The Shiretoko Peninsula, where the recent brown bear incident occurred, is a World Natural Heritage site known for its magnificent nature and attracts many tourists.

On the 16th, at Oshinkoshin Falls, a tourist spot about 20 kilometers from the current site, visitors expressed concerns about brown bears, saying they wanted to be cautious and that they felt uneasy.

A woman in her twenties from Shizuoka said, After watching the news, I talked with my friends about how we could ensure greater safety.

I want to listen to the stories of local people today and travel safely, they said.

Regarding the three brown bears that were exterminated this time, Hokkaidos research institute plans to analyze the DNA from their fur to determine whether any of them were the individuals that attacked the man.

As a reason, Mr. Takizawa says, There are more people photographing brown bears along river basins and more people approaching them to take videos with their smartphones.

As a result, bears used to hide or move away when they saw humans, but recently, they no longer move away even when they see people.

He also said, There’s no doubt that the distance between us and the brown bears has become closer than before, so we need to reconsider how we approach mountain climbing in Shiretoko.
