Convenience stores and hotels have begun efforts to reduce plastic.
FamilyMart, a major convenience store chain, is offering bamboo chopsticks instead of plastic forks and spoons to customers who buy lunch boxes and other items at 10 of its stores in Tokyo.
The hotel chain Toyoko Inn will stop providing toothbrush sets in guestrooms from April 1, and instead have customers take what they need next to the front desk.
The new law requires businesses to set reduction targets for 12 single-use plastic items and review the way they provide them, and companies have begun to respond.
