The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced that as of July 1, although there have been some occurrences of stink bugs—which can lower the quality of rice—in certain areas, there have been no major problems in most regions regarding the growth status of rice.
According to the rice growth conditions as of July 1st, based on interviews conducted by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries with each prefecture, 17 prefectures including Fukui and Hyogo responded that growth is generally favorable.
Although the response format is different, since there have been no reports from other prefectures indicating any particular problems with rice growth, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries states that rice growth is generally favorable or about average for a normal year.
When we asked about the issues, we were told that there have been many occurrences of stink bugs, which cause a decline in quality, in places like Miyagi and Mie, and that in areas like Akita, the number of stems is slightly lower than usual.
Although there are some concerns about high temperatures and low rainfall, the majority of reports say there are no particular problems, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries believes that there are no major issues with crop growth in most areas.
As rice prices remain high, this years harvest is expected to increase significantly compared to last year at the planting stage. However, there are persistent concerns that the continued high temperatures may lead to a decline in quality.
