An emergency meeting was held at the United Nations Security Council regarding the situation in the Middle East. UN Secretary-General Guterres welcomed the fact that countries such as the United Kingdom and France have recognized Palestine as a state, in support of achieving peace through a two-state solution.
ニューヨークの国連本部では23日、各国の首脳が集まる一般討論演説が始まったのにあわせて、中東情勢についての緊急会合が安全保障理事会で開かれました。
On the 23rd, as the general debate speeches by world leaders began at the United Nations headquarters in New York, an emergency meeting on the situation in the Middle East was held at the Security Council.
このなかで国連のグテーレス事務総長は、前日に開かれたイスラエルとパレスチナの「2国家共存」による和平を推進する会議について、「暗闇の中で、かすかな希望の光が見えた」と述べ、安保理の常任理事国でもあるイギリスやフランスを含む国々がパレスチナを国家として承認したことを歓迎しました。
In this context, UN Secretary-General Guterres referred to the conference held the previous day to promote peace through a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine, saying, In the darkness, we saw a faint ray of hope. He welcomed the fact that countries including the UK and France, both permanent members of the Security Council, had recognized Palestine as a state.
また、イギリスのクーパー外相は「世界はガザ地区やパレスチナ国家の将来においてハマスのいかなる役割も拒絶することで一致している」と述べ、パレスチナ国家の実現にはイスラム組織ハマスの武装解除などが不可欠だという考えを強調しました。
Additionally, British Foreign Secretary Cooper stated, The world is united in rejecting any role for Hamas in the future of Gaza and a Palestinian state, emphasizing the view that the realization of a Palestinian state requires, among other things, the disarmament of the Islamic organization Hamas.
一方、常任理事国で唯一、パレスチナを国家として承認していないアメリカのウォルツ国連大使は「パフォーマンス的な会議や一方的な安保理の決議は、私たち全員が望む平和の達成を損ない、遅らせるだけだ」と述べ、イスラエルやアメリカが反対するなか、パレスチナを国家として承認する動きをけん制しました。
On the other hand, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations—the only permanent member of the Security Council that has not recognized Palestine as a state—said, Performative meetings and unilateral Security Council resolutions only undermine and delay the achievement of the peace that we all desire, thereby discouraging moves to recognize Palestine as a state despite opposition from Israel and the United States.
