It has been revealed that Nissan Motor is in talks with several companies regarding the sale of shares in the operating company of the J1 soccer team, Yokohama F. Marinos.

Nissan posted a massive net loss of over 670 billion yen in last years financial results, and is reviewing its sports-related businesses as part of efforts to turn the company around.

Nissan owns about 75% of the shares of the company that operates the J1 soccer team Yokohama F. Marinos, making it a subsidiary.

According to people involved, Nissan has approached several companies regarding the sale of shares in this operating company, and it is expected that careful consideration will be given to the timing and other factors moving forward.

Yokohama F. Marinos is a club that originated from the Nissan Motor Soccer Club, founded in 1972, and is known as one of the top teams, having won the league championship five times so far.

Nissan fell into a massive net loss of over 670 billion yen in last years financial results, and is rushing to restructure its management, announcing plans to cut seven factories both in Japan and overseas.

Amidst these circumstances, the company is also reviewing its sports-related businesses and has ended its partnership agreement with City Football Group, which operates Manchester City and other clubs in the English Premier League.

They also proposed to Yokohama City to renew the naming rights contract for Nissan Stadium, the home of Yokohama F. Marinos, at an annual fee of 50 million yen, which is less than half of the current amount, but the city has indicated that it will reconsider.

It is one of the Original 10 teams that participated in the J.League when it was launched in 1993, and in 1999 it merged with Yokohama Flügels and changed its name from Yokohama Marinos to Yokohama F. Marinos.

The club boasts five J1 League championships, the second most after Kashima Antlers, and has also won the Emperors Cup, which determines the best soccer team in Japan, seven times including the Nissan Motors era.
