Huge Quantity of Sardines Mysteriously Washes Up on Itoigawa Beach
Removal efforts have started after a large quantity of washed-up sardines stretching over 200 meters was found on a beach in Itoigawa, Niigata Prefecture.

The city received a tip about the washed-up sardines in the morning of February 7th, when they were found on the coast at Tsutsuishi Fishing Port.
A review by the prefecture found the quantity of washed-up sardines stretching over 200 meters. According to the Niigata Prefecture Fisheries and Ocean Institute, while a clear cause is unknown, there is a possibility the sardines washed ashore after having been chased by a dolphin or other sea creature.
As the fish will start to smell badly if left alone, disposal work started on February 8th, with the prefecture enlisting the help of a local construction company.
Approximately 50 people gathered at the beach and picked up the fish, stuffing them in bags after removing mud and sand.
A local passerby said, “I’ve never seen this many fish washed ashore before.”
Masami Igarashi, deputy director of the Itoigawa Regional Development Bureau, said, “I’m sure locals were shocked by the quantity of washed-up fish.
As we don’t know the reason, I ask people to avoid taking the washed-up fish home.”
