Hokkaido Earthquake: Police and Others Search for Missing People in Destroyed Homes
６日、北海道の広い場所で大きく揺れる地震がありました
On the 6th, there was a massive earthquake all across Hokkaido.
It reached seismic intensity 7 in Atsuma Town, and there were many landslides.
Police and fire fighters are searching for missing people in the destroyed houses.
By 2PM on the 7th, NHK heard from police and city representatives that 11 people were dead, 7 people were unresponsive (hearts and breath stopped), and 22 people were missing.
All the power plants were shut down by the earthquake, so the entire island of Hokkaido is without power.
Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Sekou said on the morning of the 7th that about half the locations should have electricity to use.
However, returning electricity to the whole island will take over a week, he said.
According to the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare, at 5:30AM, 34 municipalities were without running water and the Special Defence Force was distributing water.

After the earthquake New Chitose Airport was not able to function.
Power has been restored, and from the morning of the 7th, planes were able to fly again.
