Okoze’s thorns

ある時とき、竜宮りゅうぐうの姫ひめさまが重おもい病びょうにかかりました

One day, the princess of Ryugu fell seriously ill.

魚さかなたちは相談そうだんして、病気びょうきに効きくという「山やまの神様かみさまの桃もも」を取とりに行いく事ことになりました

The fish consulted the fish and decided to go get the ``Mountain God’s Peach,’’ which is said to be effective against illness.

しかし、魚さかなたちは山やまの神かみさまが怖こわいので、誰だれも名なのり出でる者ものはいませんでした

However, the fish were afraid of the mountain god, so no one came forward.

そこで、醜みにくい顔かおのオコゼをこの時ときとばかりにおだてて、山やまの神かみさまのところへ桃ももを取とりに行いかせました

So, I took this opportunity to flatter the ugly-faced stonefish and sent him to the mountain god to pick up peaches.

オコゼから姫ひめさまの事ことを聞きいた山やまの神かみさまは「竜宮りゅうぐうの姫ひめさまを嫁よめにくれれば、桃ももをひとつあげても良よい」と、取引とりひきを持もちかけました

The mountain god heard about the princess from Okoze and offered him a deal, saying, ``If you marry me the princess of the Ryugu, I’ll give you a peach.’’

オコゼは仕方しかたなく姫ひめさまとの仲人なこうどの約束やくそくをして、桃ももをもらって逃にげるように竜宮りゅうぐうへ帰かえっていきました

Okoze had no choice but to make a deal with the princess to be a matchmaker, received the peach, and ran back to Ryugu.

この桃ももを食たべた姫ひめさまは、すっかり病気びょうきが治なおり元気げんきになりましたが、山やまの神かみさまの桃ももの力ちからにより妊娠にんしんしてしまいました

The princess who ate this peach was completely cured of her illness and became healthy, but due to the power of the mountain god’s peach, she became pregnant.

どんどん膨ふくれるお腹はらに気きがついた両親りょうしんはカンカンに怒いかり、姫ひめを竜宮りゅうぐうから追おい出だしてしまいました

When her parents noticed her growing belly, they got angry and kicked her out of the Ryugu Palace.

仕方しかたなく姫ひめさまとオコゼは、身重みおもな体からだで山やまの神かみのところへ行いき、そこで出産しゅっさんする事ことにしました

The princess and Okoze had no choice but to go to the mountain god with their pregnant bodies and give birth there.

やがて姫ひめさまは産気さんきづき、三日三晩さんにちさんばんかけてなんと４０４人にんもの子供こどもを産うみました

Eventually, the princess went into labor and gave birth to 404 children over three days and three nights.

出産しゅっさんのお世話せわをしていたオコゼが、子供こどもの足あしに触さわるとオコゼのとげの毒どくで足あしが悪わるくなり、腹はらに触さわると腹はらが悪わるくなり、頭あたまに触さわると頭あたまが悪わるい子こどもになりました

When the stonefish that was taking care of the childbirth touched the child’s feet, the child’s legs became sick due to the poison from the stonefish’s thorns, when the child’s belly was touched, the child’s stomach became sick, and when the child’s head was touched, the child became dumb.

最初さいしょは喜よろこんでいた山やまの神かみでしたが、あまりの子供こどもの多おおさにほとほと嫌いやになって、子供こどもたちを追おい出だしてしまいました

At first, the mountain god was happy, but he got really tired of seeing so many children and kicked them out.

あちこちに飛とび散ちった子供こどもたちのおかげで、人間界にんげんかいに４０４の病びょうが始はじまることになりました

Thanks to the children who were scattered all over the place, 404 diseases began in the human world.

こんな事ことがあって、山奥やまおくに引ひっ込こんでしまった山やまの神かみは、女人にょにんが山やまへ来くるとたちまち機嫌きげんが悪わるくなるようになりましたとさ

After something like this happened, the mountain god retreated deep into the mountains, and whenever a woman came to the mountain, he immediately became in a bad mood.
